Plant Protection
Diseases are the most important production constraints, which limits the successful cultivation of beans. Among the diseases, rust has become epidemic in bean growing areas.
Common diseases in french bean
-
anthracnose
Symptoms
Black sunken cankers on pods. Spots are usually depressed with dark centres and bright red, yellow or orange margins. Wet weather or high temperatures spreads the disease rapidly.
Control measures

-
ashy stem blight
Symptoms
Also known as Charcoal rot. Symptoms start at the point of attachment of cotyledon. Yellowing of leaves, blackening of stem tissue. Infection usually affects young plant.
Control measures
Seed treatment with Carbendazim (0.2%), Foliar application of Carbendazim (0.1%) or Tricyclazole(0.06%) Drench infected plants with copper oxychloride (0.3%)
-
common blight
Symptoms
Initial symptoms are water soaked spots on leaves. Irregular, sunken, reddish or brownish spots, later become brittle & surrounded by yellow halo. Damage to bean pods is often severe
Control measures
Presoaking of seeds 20 hours at 15º C and then transferring it for 25 min at 50º C. Spraying of Streptocycline (300ppm) + Copper oxychloride (0.03%).
-
root rot
Symptoms
Initial symptom is noticed in collar region of young seedling in the form of small pinhead size lesions, which are brown, or reddish in colour Pods touching the ground develop zonate circular brown spots
Control measures
Seed treatment with Carbendazim (0.2%), Foliar application of Carbendazim (0.1%) or Tricyclazole(0.06%) Drench the infected plants with COC (0.3%)

RUST DISEASE
Symptoms
Bean rust is a fungal disease affecting leaves, pods and stems. It occurs mostly in wet weather. Symptoms are rust-coloured spots within yellowed areas. Rust pustules are found mainly on the underside of leaves.
Control measures
Spray Mancozeb (0.25%) Zineb (0.2%) Triademefan(0.1%), Propiconozole (0.025%). Avoid excess irrigation & nitrogen use & ensure enough potassium fertilization.
-
BEAN Yellow mosaic
Symptoms
Main symptoms of the disease are bright yellowing of leaves or golden coloured leaves, variable levels of curling, generally stunted growth, and distorted pods. Pods fail to expand and can also curl down.
Control measures
Whiteflies will transmits the virus under natural conditions. Remove weeds in fields. Increase the plant density to hinder the fly from entering the canopy. Mulches can be used to reduce whiteflies.
